For those of you who have accomplished a few things and have some successes to talk about, here is something even better than the #opentowork banner.
Writing Comments on LinkedIn
In webinars I facilitate, one of the questions I’m always asked about LinkedIn is, “Should I show that I’m open to work? I don’t want to seem desperate, but I can use help.” And let me just start by saying, you don’t seem desperate. What you seem like is that you need help. But I understand that you don’t want to come across as desperate because it affects you, you worry about this. So I want to get that out of your mind and give you a strategy, a tactic that could make a difference for you.
Try this instead: write a post in the feed on LinkedIn that talks about a success that you had. Go into detail about it: who the target audience was, what you did, a whole host of different things that talks about the success that you had. And here’s the fun part: at the end of it, you conclude by saying, “And if you know of a team or an organization that can use someone who can do this,” and fill in the blank, “what the outcome is of this.”
So if this was a community builder, be talking about driving engagement and business outcomes. If it’s another field like software development, “someone who could develop agile software in such a way that,” fill in the blank, “let’s talk.” So let me give you the example that I have on the screen now: “If you know of a team that needs a community builder who can drive both engagement and business outcomes, let’s talk.”
What this does is it avoids the desperation because what you’re doing is spending most of the post talking about success stories. You’re tagging people at the very end so people see it. So let’s say there are 10 people you worked with, you tag all 10. You repost it if there’s another 10; you tag them in a repost, not immediately, but let’s say a day later. The idea is to enroll people in your work. Use hashtags for particular fields and work that you do. But the goal here is not to have that green open banner in your feed; instead, talk about a success that you had and what you achieved from it.
