In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains how to answer one of those tricky brain teasers hedge funds are known to ask — how do you fill a jar with exactly 4 gallons of water if we give you a 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug of water?
Today, I’m going to talk with you about one of those tough interview questions. One of those brain teasers that hedge funds often use when they’re interviewing someone. The question goes something like this.
How do you get exactly four gallons if we give you a five gallon and a three gallon, bucket/jar whatever the item is.
Now, this is initially, I know when I first saw this years ago, I kind of went, “huh, should be easy,” and I kind of hacked around that for a little bit, but I figured it out in a couple minutes. I want to make it easy for you. So here’s how it goes.
Take the five gallon jug of water, pour it and fill up the three gallon. So, now you have two left in the five. You have the full three. What do you think you ought to do?
Pour out the three. Now, you have none and two. Fill up the three gallon with two fill up the five again. Got it so far? So, you now have two gallons in the three and five gallons in the five and, then, you pour water one gallon into the three and that means you’re left with four in the five-gallon jug. Remember, they didn’t tell you how to do with one move. They told you “how do you do this?”
