There’s already a problem with Amazon’s newest Kindle models

Amazon has just overhauled the entirety of its Kindle lineup, with new versions of each of its major e-reader lines, as well as new reading accessories. The hype is still fresh in the air, but it appears that sporadic reports of a light bleed issue have taken hold on the internet.

Some Reddit users are reporting that their new Kindle Basic models are bleeding light from the bezel area, creating a visual distraction when the e-reader is in operation. It appears to be that this light bleed issue stems from the e-reader’s new physical construction, with its front-lit display and its new flush bezel design.

Both the plastic and the aluminum variants of the new base-level Kindle in all colorways appear to be impacted by the issue equally, with the problem being most noticeable when configuring the device to dark mode.

Amazon, for its part, has stated that prominent light bleeding is often considered a defect, and that customers experiencing severe light bleed are “typically advised to exchange the device” (via Good e-Reader). The company is aware of the problem, though it hasn’t made any official public-facing statement as of yet.

“When a device is in dark mode with brightness at max in a dark setting, customers may see a glow around the edges of the book. This was expected to achieve a color bezel, and it appears only in very specific use cases, like dark mode with high brightness. If customers want to mitigate this glow, we recommend trying a lower brightness setting when in dark mode,” adds Amazon in a statement to Good e-Reader.

Light bleed can be distracting, as it causes a not-so-subtle glow to appear around parts of the perimeter of a device’s display panel. Most modern tech gadgets with a screen have managed to mitigate the effects of light bleed in recent years, but it still occasionally crops up on new hardware from time to time.

In the case of the new Kindle Basic, I hope to see the issue rectified promptly by Amazon. It’s likely that manufacturing-level tuning will take place to prevent light bleed from being as prominent in future hardware batches, and that the issue can be chalked up to new-generation growing pains.

That being said, it’s still disappointing to see prominent light bleeding affecting devices of any kind, and at any price range.
