For much of my childhood, I watched the Super Bowl every year with my friends and family on ESPN or ABC, since people couldn’t stream sports yet. These days, platforms like Peacock, Hulu, Sling TV, and YouTube TV let subscribers stream live football games, completely changing the game. And now, the Super Bowl has found another home on Disney+ just in time for the new season.
According to the ESPN Press Room, Disney+ will livestream Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027, from the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. ESPN and ABC will continue to broadcast the big game at the same time in both English and Spanish. The Super Bowl will also feature commentary from Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Lisa Salters, and Laura Rutledge. This year’s halftime reporters have yet to be revealed.
Disney+ will stream the Super Bowl to audiences in the U.S. and over 55 other international markets. These include Latin America, Brazil, the Caribbean, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, all of which are huge markets for the NFL. Meanwhile, ESPN’s linear platforms will bring the Super Bowl to over 130 countries and territories.
This is Disney’s latest effort to capitalize on the expanding sports market through streaming. The Mouse House has long bundled Disney+ with ESPN to draw in subscribers. But with a sporting event like the Super Bowl coming to the platform, Disney+ has taken another major step toward making football a major part of its brand.
How can I stream the Super Bowl on Disney+?
Stream the big game from your TV or smart device
Football fans can stream Super Bowl LXI with a regular Disney+ subscription. A standalone membership currently costs $12.99/month, but you can stream content without ads for $21.99/month. You can sign up by visiting DisneyPlus.com on your web browser or by visiting the Disney+ app on your phone or smart TV.
Since the Super Bowl is still months away, it’s unclear whether Disney+ subscription prices will change before then. In the meantime, audiences will be able to watch two Monday Night Football games during the regular season on Disney+. ESPN announced that the service will livestream the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles on October 26. The second game streaming on Disney+ has not yet been revealed.
Why is ESPN streaming the Super Bowl on Disney+?
Does this new streaming method make a difference?
If you already own a regular TV, it may be cheaper just to watch the Super Bowl on ABC or ESPN. Additionally, if you don’t have Disney+, you can still stream both Super Bowl LXI and Monday Night Football games on the ESPN app in the U.S. As a result, you may be asking whether putting the game on Disney+ will bring any benefits to viewers.
Bear in mind, this is the first time in history ESPN has produced the Super Bowl. Since Disney owns ESPN, it’s no surprise that the latter’s parent company would try to put this massive sporting event on its flagship streaming service. It also seems like another way for Disney+ to advertise the game. If you’re streaming titles like VisionQuest or The Simpsons, you’ll probably be reminded of the Super Bowl by ads that pop up in Disney+.
All in all, the Super Bowl seems like a way for Disney+ to drive up users. Since it is often the most-watched television event of the year, it’s no wonder Disney is trying to use it to turn viewers into subscribers. Whether this will have a major impact on Disney+ subscriber numbers remains to be seen. At the very least, Disney+ has given audiences another way to see the Super Bowl this February.
