Man United vs Brighton: Visitors halve the deficit with deserved goal after Shea Lacey and Mason Mount netted within 98 SECONDS

Follow Daily Mail Sport’s live blog of Manchester United v Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round, including updates from Coventry City v Aston Villa – and Sunderland v AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

HALF-TIME: Coventry 1-2 Aston Villa

It was a really exciting first half over at the CBS Arena, with Aston Villa managing to restore their lead before the break.

It’s proving to be a difficult start to the season for Frank Lampard’s side, to say the least…

HALF-TIME: Sunderland 0-0 AZ Alkmaar

Goalless at the break.

The hosts have dominated the first half, recording 13 shots to Alkmaar’s two. But despite all the pressure, they’ve lacked the clinical edge, and just two of their shots have been on target.

Sunderland fans will be hoping there’s no regrets at the end of this one.

HALF-TIME: Man United 2-1 Brighton

We’ve got a game on our hands here.

Two-nil is such a dangerous scoreline, and Brighton have just reminded United why. Fabian Hurzeler’s side responded so well when things looked like they could get messy for them.

They deserved that – and Fabian Hurzeler won’t have much to say at half-time other than ‘keep on as you are’, I imagine.

Goal:Man United 2-1 Brighton (Kostoulas 46′)

Right on the edge of half-time, Brighton have pulled one back.

Jaouen Hadjam sends a long ball down the pitch and Charalampos Kostoulas brings it down and pokes it into the United goal from close range.

There’ll be questions over whether Karl Darlow should have done better there.

Goal:Coventry 1-2 Aston Villa (Barkley 40′)

Aston Villa have regained the lead through Ross Barkley.

Ibrahim Mbaye swings in the corner kick and Barkley is unmarked at the near post and Coventry are punished. It’s the 32-year-old’s first goal of the season.

Man United 2-0 Brighton

Noussair Mazraoui seems like he’s shaken off that earlier injury problem, by the way.

CHANCE: Man United 2-0 Brighton

Close!

Pascal Gross feeds a superb pass through the lines for Malick Yalcouye, who tears down on goal and is one-on-one with Karl Darlow, but is unable to find the quality on his shot and drags it wide.

Brighton are one goal away from getting right back in this, you feel. The visitors have certainly seemed the better team since Mason Mount’s goal went in.

Man United 2-0 Brighton

Nathan Salt, Daily Mail Sport’s football reporter, at Old Trafford:

Any initial doubts about how warmly a Marcus Rashford return would be received here at Old Trafford have long been extinguished. He gets the biggest roar when he collects the ball and is playing with a confidence that is like the Rashford of old. This is what fans want from him all the time.

Tom Collomosse: ‘Villa looked rushed’

Tom Collomosse, Daily Mail Sport’s Midlands reporter, at CBS Arena:

Can that get Cov’s season going? Their first goal of the season at the CBS Arena, thanks to some very dopey play by Ross Barkley. Suddenly, Villa look rushed and fragile.

Goal:Coventry 1-1 Aston Villa (Torp 27′)

Victor Torp levels the scoring at the CBS Arena.

It comes directly from a free-kick from around 27 yards out – it’s a wonderful, dipping shot which leaves Marco Bizot rooted.

Coventry City fans have been needing something to celebrate.

Man United 2-0 Brighton

Ayden Heaven’s just been outmuscled by Matt O’Riley, and gets lucky as Leny Yoro bolts over and clears the ball away before the Brighton attacker can get a whiff at goal.

Heaven will be breathing a sigh of relief after that one. That was close.

Tom Collomosse: ‘I’d expect Mbaye to play at Spurs at the weekend’

Tom Collomosse, Daily Mail Sport’s Midlands reporter, at CBS Arena:

Mbaye might not be F1 car/cheetah rapid, but he’s rapid, alright. It should make teams think twice about playing a high line against Villa. I’d expect him to play at Spurs at the weekend, I really would. He’s not plugged in to what Emery wants defensively yet but the benefit outweighs the cost I think.
