We know United have fallen off an absolute cliff in last 13 years or so. They have failed to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

But they are working their ways back up. Two years ago they had the disaster year when relegation, for a while, seemed an unthinkable possibility. Things went south under Erik ten Hag, and Ruben Amorim was brought in to save the day. Sort of.

That went wrong too, but Michael Carrick indeed did then save the day. He led his former side to a third-place finish last season – the best of the rest behind Arsenal and Man City – and back to the Champions League.

So here they are. How they can do, no one really knows. Their fixtures include tough matches against Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich, but also ‘gimme’ matches like tonight.
