Dolby Atmos is a fantastic way to listen to music or watch movies, but not every Atmos sound system is created equally. What I mean by that is depending on your hardware, you might be getting an inferior experience compared to somebody else. That could easily lead somebody to believe that Dolby Atmos isn’t worth the trouble, but that’s far from the case. I went through the trouble of building a Dolby Atmos sound system in my living room, and while there’s still work to be done with it, I’m happy with what I’ve come up with.
It’s very easy to fall into the trap of thinking something like a Dolby Atmos soundbar is the be-all, end-all of the format, and I don’t blame you. Companies do a lot of marketing to make you think this way, but if you ask me, you need proper height-mounted speakers to get the real Dolby Atmos sound. Dolby Atmos is all about directional audio, and while upfiring speakers can mimic that, nothing beats the real thing. If you already have overhead speakers and still think your setup is lacking, there are a few other things you could try.

Calibrate your sound system
Don’t ever skip this step
Room correction software comes with any receiver worth its salt, and it’s something you need to use. For my Denon receiver, this is called Audyssey. The way it works is that I use the bundled microphone that comes with a receiver and move it around to three different listening areas. The receiver will then send audio to each of the speakers and automatically adjust the sound depending on those positions. This software needs to be run again if you move anything in your setup due to the way it finely tunes everything to how the speakers were placed.
This is the number one piece of advice I give to anybody who’s not happy with the way their audio sounds, Dolby Atmos or not. Room calibration is a huge deal, and there’s a reason your receiver walks you through the steps of doing so when you finish setting it up. This could be all the different to a sound system that sounds bad and one that sounds good. If you’re ever running into issues, pull out that microphone and get to calibrating. Sometimes it’s not possible if you bought a used receiver, but if you bought one new, don’t skip this crucial step.

The simple solution is often the best solution. As I said before, Dolby Atmos and soundbars don’t mix as much as they should. The high-end ones with specific surround speakers fare much better, such as one I saw at IFA 2026, but that’s not the case for all of them. The ones that rely exclusively on upfiring speakers don’t do overhead audio as well as they should, and it’s even worse when there’s little to no separation between the speakers. All of this creates a muddy sound, but you can minimize these problems. In the case of upfiring speakers, you want a ceiling height between 7.5 and 14 feet. On top of that, Dolby recommends your ceiling be made out of an acoustically reflective material such as drywall or hardwood. That’s not always possible, especially if you’re a renter, however.
If you do this and still have some problems, then you might be faced with a difficult decision. Either it’s moving on from your soundbar to a surround sound system, which is a costly option, or buying one with more separation. In many cases, this is fixed by getting a speaker that has a set of surround speakers that you have control over. I would still consider getting an actual surround sound system, but that’s not always possible for people limited in space. If a soundbar is your only option, then you should do some extra research and find one that’s worth the price instead of looking for the most affordable one.

Switch from digital to physical
Something that you might not realize is that Dolby Atmos on streaming sounds different than it does physically. This is especially clear in movies. The problem with streaming Dolby Atmos is that it’s often lossy and compressed — a bad combination for your listening experience. On the other hand, a 4K Blu-ray has uncompressed audio, and if you use your TV’s eARC port, you get the most bandwidth possible.
It might not seem like it, but this is actually a pretty big difference, and it’s one of the main draws of physical media. I wouldn’t say it’s worth going out and grabbing a 4K disc for the audio upgrade alone, especially if you don’t have a 4K TV, but I’d say it’s still something that’s a nice cherry on top. Some regular Blu-ray discs have an Atmos soundtrack, but it’s not nearly as prevalent as it is on 4K. The nice part about this is that you might not have to change anything about your setup at all, it just comes down to what you’re listening to with it.
