The woman raped by Tom Silvagni has drawn on her experience to deliver a powerful warning about the human cost of speculation surrounding the Sydney Swans hotel scandal.

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, spoke out on Tuesday after an alleged sexual assault at the Pullman East Melbourne sparked a police investigation and widespread discussion across social media.

She urged people to consider the alleged survivor before commenting on unverified claims.

‘With all the current headlines in the Australian media right now, it’s so important to remember that behind all these headlines is a real person, a survivor who’s already trying to comprehend what happened on the weekend, and now is seeing their very personal experience discussed all over social media and the news,’ she said.

Her intervention came as rumours about what occurred inside the Swans’ hotel spread online, despite Victoria Police releasing few details about the allegation.

The woman said the case should not be treated as entertainment or reduced to conversations about footballers and their careers.

‘Before you comment on this topic next time, just keep in mind there’s a real person behind this, a survivor with a strength and courage, but also someone who needs as much peace and comfort as they can right now,’ she said.

‘This isn’t gossip to go and talk about with your friends, this is someone’s real traumatic experience.’

She then directed a personal message to the person at the centre of the police investigation.

‘Please think about this before you next comment on this topic or go and ‘gossip’ about it with your friends,’ she said.

‘It may just be a headline or a story to you, but to someone this is their real life right now. Please remember this x. And to this alleged survivor; I hear you and believe you and my DM’s are always open x.’

Police began investigating after receiving a report of a sexual assault at the Wellington Parade hotel during the early hours of Monday.

Sydney’s players were staying there following their 36-point win over Essendon at the MCG, a victory which locked in second place and a home qualifying final.

Some members of the playing group reportedly visited Harlow Bar in Richmond after the match before returning to the hotel in separate groups.

Witnesses later described distressed women speaking with hotel employees and Swans officials in the foyer at about 7am.

Police subsequently attended the property, gathered material, and sought hotel CCTV as detectives worked to establish what had occurred.

Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, James Jordon and Riley Bice were named in media reports as players who voluntarily assisted investigators.

None of the players were arrested or accused of wrongdoing, and Victoria Police has not publicly identified any suspect.

The woman behind Tuesday’s appeal endured her own highly public criminal case after being raped by Tom Silvagni, the son of Carlton champion Stephen Silvagni.

A County Court jury convicted Silvagni of two counts of rape in December 2025 following a 10-day trial.

The court heard Silvagni entered a darkened bedroom at his parents’ home in January 2024 and deceived the woman into believing he was another man with whom she had earlier engaged in consensual sexual activity.

She became suspicious, repeatedly questioned his identity and told him to stop before recognising him by his hair.

Silvagni later altered an Uber receipt and attempted to construct a false account of the night. The jury rejected his claim that he had acted out of panic after being falsely accused.

He was sentenced to six years and two months in prison, with a non-parole period of three years and three months.

Silvagni is appealing his conviction, while the police investigation into the separate Swans hotel allegation remains ongoing.
