Distressing 911 call reveals 21-year-old sorority sister’s chaotic final moments before she plunged to her death out Seattle apartment window

The family of a UCLA student who died after falling from the window of her Seattle apartment have questioned the circumstances surrounding her death after a friend told a 911 dispatcher she had been ‘extremely intoxicated’ moments before the fatal fall.

Dayanara Nicole Urbina Ruiz, 21, died on Thursday after falling from an open window at the Trailside Seattle Apartments overlooking the Burke-Gilman Trail in Seattle’s University District.

Ruiz was a communications student at UCLA who was spending the summer in Seattle as a marketing intern with Amazon Web Services.

She suffered multiple blunt force injuries after unintentionally falling from the open window, according to the King County Medical Examiner.

Emergency dispatch records show a friend called 911 at about 9.19pm to report Ruiz was intoxicated, running into the street and trying to get into strangers’ vehicles while the caller attempted to get her back inside the apartment.

Dispatcher notes read: ‘RP’S EXTREMELY INTOX FRIEND RUNNING AROUND. RP TRYING TO GET HER BACK INSIDE TO HER APARTMENT. SUBJ TRYING TO GET INTO PEOPLE’S VEHS. RUNNING IN THE STREET. INTOX ON ALCOHOL. NO WPNS.’

While her death was ruled an accident, her family has challenged the account of her final moments, saying the behavior described in an emergency call did not reflect the responsible young woman they knew.

Ruiz’s sister, Catherine, told The California Post she did not believe her sibling would have willingly become as intoxicated as described.

‘She was on the other side of the world last year on an internship. She went to a music festival. She had fun and, like I said, she was very responsible.

‘She’s not one to get, like she described her, sloppy or too drunk. No, that’s not my sister.’

Catherine said she later spoke with the friend who was with Ruiz during her final hours and was told the pair began drinking around 4pm before Ruiz allegedly became combative when it was time to return home.

‘My sister is the kind of woman that always puts her priorities first,’ she said. ‘She was not like that. She was absolutely not like that.’

In addition to her internship, Ruiz served as co-president of UCLA’s fashion club and was active in Phi Lambda Rho Sorority Inc.’s UCLA chapter.

Ruiz’s death prompted an outpouring of grief from members of Phi Lambda Rho Sorority Inc.’s UCLA chapter, who remembered her as ‘a bright light, a gentle soul, and someone whose kindness touched everyone around her.’

The organization said Ruiz was ‘always there for those in need, offering support, hope, and compassion without hesitation,’ adding that ‘her impact will continue to live on through the lives she touched.’

With her family’s permission, the sorority also shared a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses.

On the page, relatives described Ruiz as someone who ‘was always there for anyone in need and ready to help.’

Amazon also paid tribute to the intern, saying it was ‘deeply saddened’ by the loss.

‘We’re deeply saddened by the passing of one of our Amazon colleagues, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones,’ a spokesperson said.

‘We’re focused on providing support and resources to her family and her team during this difficult time.’
