I love adventure movies that immerse me in a different time and place. Classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark revisit the Second World War through the eyes of an American archaeologist. Gladiator gives us a gritty take on the brutality of the Roman Colosseum with an Oscar-winning performance from Russel Crowe. The Man in the Iron Mask is an underrated musketeer adventure with a star-studded cast set in France during the reign of King Louis XIV.
This movie is a historical epic based on an Alexandre Dumas novel, The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later. It’s the third book to feature D’Artagnan and is set 35 years after The Three Musketeers.
Leonardo DiCaprio shines in dual roles as the spoiled and arrogant King Louis XIV and his humble twin brother. The cast also features Gabriel Byrne as D’Artagnan, Jeremy Irons as Aramis, John Malkovich as Athos, and Gérard Depardieu as Porthos.
The Man in the Iron Mask kicks off with the young and cruel King Louis having lavish parties while his subjects are rioting and on the verge of revolt after being forced to eat rotten food. He doesn’t care and orders future rioters to be shot. Meanwhile, the Jesuits launch an assassination attempt on the King, but the would-be killer is stopped by D’Artagnan, the captain of the King’s Guard.
France is in trouble, and Aramis summons his former musketeer colleagues, Porthos and Athos, to a secret meeting to reveal that he is the secret head of the Jesuits whom the king is hunting. He recruits them into a plot to overthrow the king by replacing him with his secret twin brother, the man in the iron mask.
The old musketeers must find a way to break the twin out of prison without raising suspicion and train him to behave like his brother, the King, before swapping one for the other. It isn’t easy because D-Artagnan is fiercely loyal to the king and will do anything to protect him, even if it means going up against his old friends.
The Man in the Iron Mask was released in 1998 to middling reviews, but still did decent business at the box office, making around $182.9 million on a $35 million budget. It’s a fun-filled movie with suspense and intrigue, and Leonardo DiCaprio in one of his most villainous roles.
