Car rams into ICE agent and flees as gunshots are fired in wild New Jersey scene

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer was struck by a suspect fleeing arrest in a wild New Jersey scene.

ICE agents were attempting to detain a suspect on Route 72 near Mermaid Drive in Manahawkin around 9.30am ET on Monday when the chaos unfolded.

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle, hitting the officer, according to the Stafford Township Police Department.

The officer fired his gun at the car as it sped off, reportedly striking it, police said. He sustained unspecified injuries.

The suspect escaped the scene, and it is unknown if that person was injured.

Images shared on social media showed the officer lying on the road as other agents rushed to his aid.

Police said there is no threat to the public, but advised residents to avoid the area while the investigation is underway.

‘There is no reason to believe there is any concern for the public’s safety,’ Stafford Township Police said.

‘Please avoid the area during the investigation, which will likely continue for several hours.’
