Since the end of the Second World War, countless films and TV shows have depicted the events that unfolded during those six long years between 1939 and 1945. Some of the most memorable and impactful that immediately come to mind are A Bridge Too Far, The Battle of Britain, The Longest Day, Schindler’s List, The Great Escape, and The Bridge on the River Kwai.
While I’ve watched all of those films and been deeply moved by each of them, the war movie I find myself revisiting most often is Saving Private Ryan, which was released in 1998. Widely regarded as one of the best — if not the greatest — war films ever made, it’s the movie that really sparked my interest in studying the Second World War when I was younger. Even today, whenever someone asks me for a war movie recommendation, it’s always the first title that comes to mind.
Directed by legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan follows a group of American soldiers in the immediate aftermath of the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. Their mission is to venture deep into Nazi-occupied France to bring home Private James Ryan, an Airborne soldier whose three brothers have all been killed in combat. Led by Captain Miller, the soldiers undertake an increasingly dangerous journey, and along the way, the film explores powerful themes such as the brutality of war, sacrifice, and the bonds formed among soldiers.
Saving Private Ryan features an unforgettable cast, including Tom Hanks as Captain Miller, Matt Damon as Private Ryan, Tom Sizemore as Mike Horvath, Vin Diesel as Private Caparzo, and Edward Burns as Private Reiben.
If you’ve never seen Saving Private Ryan or have been meaning to rewatch it, now is the perfect opportunity, as it’s been added to this free streaming service.
