College football player dead at 18 after being caught in crossfire of a Florida shooting


Ball State has announced the death of Gavin Yates-Lyons, a freshman defensive back who was caught in the crossfire of a shooting last weekend in Florida.

The 18-year-old has been hospitalized since the incident last Sunday and passed away on Saturday, May 30.

The teenager had been celebrating his high school graduation when he sustained critical injuries after being caught up in the incident.

‘We extend sincere condolences to his family, friends, coaches, teammates and all who held him close. May you find comfort and strength during this challenging moment,’ the school said in a statement announcing his death.

Ball State football chief of staff Peter Roley added on X: ‘Gavin was an extraordinary person and it is difficult to express the grief we all feel. Our hearts are with his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. 

‘Thank you to the Ball State admin, staff and community for the support of our players and staff as we mourn.’

According to local reports, the incident happened at around 5am last Sunday. Yates-Lyons was one of three people who were hurt.

A GoFundMe, launched to help Yates-Lyons’ family cover the costs surrounding his passing, has already raised over $9,000. It has a target of $12k.

‘The family has been overwhelmed by the love, prayers, and support from the community,’ a statement on the page said. 

‘We ask that you continue to keep Gavin’s family, friends, and loved ones in your prayers as they mourn the loss of a remarkable young man whose impact will never be forgotten.’
