It was a busy week with several new hires, several new people to work with during their career transition, the release of my newest book, supporting my wife as she helps her niece transition to a temporary group home and works with social workers to find something more permanent. Emotionally, it has been difficult for her as I listen and ask questions. I want to fix the problem, but I can’t so I listen.
The book, :Starting Over: The No BS Playbook: How to Land a New Job After 10+ Years With One Employer Whether You Chose to Leave or Were Forced Out” will be available for Kindle for $0.99 for this final week before reverting to its normal price of $9.99. The audiobook is at its normal price.
I hope you like it and leave a review.
Networking Arbitrage: Using AI to Map Value Before You Message
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
When a job search stalls, the bottleneck is rarely a lack of qualifications. It is almost always an inability to scale attention. In an ecosystem crowded with automated templates and low-effort connection requests, the standard LinkedIn pitch has been thoroughly devalued. For leaders and individual contributors, breaking through requires a clean break from automation-for-volume. You must use AI as an analytical engine to map corporate friction points before you ever initiate contact.
Let’s step back, dismantle the boilerplate networking email and replace it with an AI-driven methodology designed to establish immediate peer-to-peer authority.
1. Move Past the Shared Connection
Most networking advice relies on vanity indicators: a mutual colleague, an overlapping university, or a shared geographic region. These are baseline pleasantries, not strategic catalysts. AI allows you to bypass the pleasantries and execute Deep Personalization by isolating an executive or person’s current operational burden.
The Strategy: Executives are public-facing entities. They leave data trails in the form of quarterly investor calls, panel transcripts, white papers, and industry panels. Your objective is to use AI to find the delta between what they are promising the market and what their infrastructure can realistically deliver.
The AI Protocol: Feed a target executive’s recent public commentary or their company’s latest macro updates into an LLM.
The Analytical Prompt: “Analyze this text from the perspective of an institutional investor. Identify the top two operational or infrastructure risks implied by this growth strategy. Cross-reference these risks with my core expertise in [Your Specialization] and generate a concise, peer-level observation regarding the friction they will face.”
By leading your outreach with this insight, you change the dynamic. You are no longer an applicant looking for an opening; you are an advisor flagging a blind spot.
2. Semantic Proximity Mapping: Locating the Functional Peer
Targeting the wrong node in an organization wastes critical momentum. HR professionals and talent acquisition leads are trained to filter for historical compliance (matching past titles to current openings). They are rarely equipped to evaluate forward-looking strategic utility. You need to reach your Future Peer—the line executive who actually owns the budget and feels the pain of the unpicked lock.
The Tactic: Use AI to build a profile of your ideal internal advocate based on semantic career paths rather than rigid corporate titles.
The Execution: Extract the LinkedIn profile text of five leaders who successfully transitioned into your target domain during a market contraction. Ask the AI model to isolate the hidden common denominators in their background: What vocabulary do they use to describe their wins? What specific inflection points preceded their promotions?
The Outreach Alignment: Use those semantic markers to filter your 2nd-degree LinkedIn network. When you reach out, your language will automatically mirror the internal vocabulary of their executive suite, signaling immediate cultural and operational fit.
3. Evade the Automated Filter
The human brain is remarkably adept at recognizing synthetic text. If an executive senses even a fraction of an AI-generated template like over-indexing on words like “transformative,” “passionate,” “delighted,” or “synergy,” the message is immediately thought of as spam.
The 80/20 Rule of Production: Leverage AI for the heavy cognitive lifting–the data aggregation, the trend analysis, and the structural outlining (the 80%). But reserve the final execution (the 20%) entirely for your own human voice.
The Tonal Audit: Run your drafted message back through the AI with a highly restrictive stylistic prompt: “Review this outreach draft. Strip out all corporate boilerplate, introductory filler, and generic conversational lubrication. Shorten sentences to vary the cadence, use direct active verbs, and ensure the tone reflects the clinical brevity of a wartime CEO.”
4. Compliance as a Trust Signal
Your command of data hygiene is an explicit indicator of your judgment. Using AI tools to unearth unlisted personal cell phone numbers or scraping protected internal directories doesn’t signal resourcefulness; it signals a liability.
The Guardrail: Restrict your AI research strictly to Public Signals. When you analyze an executive’s thoughts on a public industry shift, you demonstrate market awareness.
The Security Parameter: Never input proprietary metrics, unannounced financial data, or sensitive operational structures from your current or former employer into a public model to help build your case studies. A leader who compromises data security to secure an interview will not be trusted with an enterprise P&L.
The Bottom Line
AI-driven networking is an exercise in leverage, not volume. It is about using machine intelligence to arrive at an understanding of the challenges a company, leader and/or manager is facing faster than your competition can. When you ground your outreach this way, the conversation shifts from a transactional job request to an active strategic alignment.
