A New York man has been charged with second-degree murder after his girlfriend was found unresponsive in her car and later died.

The Suffolk County Police announced on Sunday, May 17, that 40-year-old Michael McHenry was arrested and charged in connection with the death of Juliann Bachmann, 30.

Police said that McHenry was arrested around 8:15 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 16 — more than 12 hours after Bachmann was found unresponsive inside her car at a gas station in Yaphank, N.Y.

In a press release, police said they found Bachmann injured and unresponsive around 7:25 a.m. on Saturday. She was taken to a hospital in Patchogue, N.Y., where she was pronounced dead.

In a criminal complaint obtained by the New York Post, prosecutors alleged that McHenry stabbed Bachmann in the neck and chest inside her car. He then allegedly dragged her out of the vehicle.

Prosecutors said that bystanders dialed 911 during the attack, but McHenry fled the scene, the outlet reported.

At a vigil held by her friends and family on Sunday, Bachmann was remembered as a loving mother of three, and her family confirmed that she and McHenry had been dating, per the Post.

"This guy is somebody that I think she thought she would find some sort of love with," her sister Kristen said, per the Post.

"But he actually took four lives," Kristen added, referring to Bachmann and her three children.
