Project Hail Mary had a truly unprecedented run at movie theaters earlier this year, earning half a billion dollars during its initial release back in March. This led to a theatrical extension, a limited-time return to IMAX screens, and plenty of online discourse about how Hollywood (and the theater-going experience) may not actually be as dead as previously predicted.
However, all good things must come to an end, and if you were waiting for Project Hail Mary to come to streaming platforms., I have good news for you: As of today, you can stream the film on all major VOD platforms, including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video on Demand, and Fandango at Home for $19.99 (rental) or $24.99.
Though I am excited about this digital release, there is something missing that I can’t help but notice.

Where is the Project Hail Mary physical release?
I need a 4K steelbook, stat
Though DVD, Blu-ray and 4K movie releases hit a bit of a dip with the advent of streaming, we have solid evidence that physical media is making a big comeback in 2026. And while recent movies like Michael and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie set plans for physical home releases before the movies even hit digital, Project Hail Mary currently has no official physical media release listing on any website.
This is curious, as a 4K/Blu-ray release seems all but assured given the success of the movie in theaters. So what could be the hold up? It’s impossible to say for certain, but I have a theory.
Ever since it was revealed earlier this year that over an hour’s worth of additional footage was left on the cutting room floor, fans of this film have been clamoring to see what they missed in the theatrical release of the film. And given the insane popularity of this film, I think publisher Amazon-MGM would be crazy not to polish up some of this previously unseen footage and put it together into some kind of extended edition with the additional scenes either included as part of a bonus features area or actually edited in to the film.
Of course, such a task takes time and while Amazon could release two different versions of a physical edition, I think waiting for this hypothetical additional material to be ready makes sense.
To be clear, nothing has been confirmed and this is all just an educated guess by me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a physical release is announced with additional material sometime in the coming weeks, with a release potentially planned for later this summer.
What about Amazon Prime Video?
Project Hail Mary will be free for subscribers to stream before the end of the year
Though Project Hail Mary is available for purchase digitally on Amazon Prime, the film will be available to stream for free for Amazon Prime Video subscribers before the end of the year. There have been no updates as to when that might be exactly, but, like the physical release of the movie, my guess is that we will see a summer debut for Amazon Prime Video subscribers.
