2 of the best Western movies of all time are finally free to stream

If there’s one movie genre I regret not getting into sooner, it’s Westerns. I grew up mainly watching sci-fi flicks like Star Wars and old war movies like The Great Escape and The Longest Day, and it wasn’t until I was in college that I started diving into Westerns. That’s when I realized how much I’d been missing out on, with so many brilliantly written and directed Westerns released over the past century, many of which are regarded as masterpieces.

Some of the most memorable Westerns I’ve watched over the years include No Country for Old Men, A Fistful of Dollars, Stagecoach, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. While I’ve enjoyed all of those movies, there are two films in particular that stand out whenever I think about the genre, and both are widely considered among the best Westerns ever made: The Magnificent Seven (1960) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Directed by John Sturges, The Magnificent Seven follows a small Mexican village that has been repeatedly terrorized by a ruthless bandit gang, leaving the villagers desperate and seemingly powerless to defend themselves. In a last-ditch effort to protect their home, they hire gunslinger Chris Adams (Yul Brynner), who recruits six other gunslingers to help defend the village and train its people to fight back. Among them is Vin Tanner, played by Steve McQueen.

On the other hand, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was directed by the legendary filmmaker Sergio Leone, a pioneer of the Spaghetti Western genre. Released in 1966, the film follows the Man with No Name, also known as “Blondie,” played by Clint Eastwood, a gunslinger who finds himself in a race against two other gunslingers to track down a buried stash of gold.

The good news is that if you’ve never seen either of these iconic Westerns before, or it’s time for a long-overdue rewatch, now is the perfect time, because both movies are about to arrive on this streaming service for free.

Both of these iconic Westerns will be available on Pluto TV starting August 1

You’ll be able to stream them in full for free, with ads
