The tragic incident occurred in the hamlet of Maplecrest on Friday, July 31, at approximately 7:54 p.m. local time, a spokesperson for the Greene County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) said in a statement to PEOPLE.
According to a media release shared by the GCSO on Saturday, Aug. 1, a preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was being driven on a private gravel driveway that serves several homes.

The incident occurred after the UTV, which was being driven by the 14-year-old, appeared to veer off the side of the driveway and strike a boulder. The vehicle then rolled onto its passenger side, pinning the 12-year-old and 10-year-old beneath it.
A neighbor was ultimately able to pull the UTV off the children using his truck, per police.
The injured children were transported to Albany Medical Center, where the 12-year-old was pronounced dead. The 10-year-old is currently in critical condition.
