How do you choose a strapless bra?

“The most important factor is to identify what purpose this bra will serve,” says Ashley Afriyie. “Is it for an evening gown, a strapless top, a special occasion, or an everyday staple?” are the main questions she considers, believing that all of this information plays a major factor in the style you should purchase. Jennifer Zuccarini also recommends a little trial-and-error during the shopping process. “It’s definitely harder to find a great fitting strapless, so you may need to try on a few options to find the right style and fit,” she says. Feel free to experiment a bit before committing to one.

What do you wear a strapless bra with?

For low-back, special occasion dresses and blouses, Afriyie recommends a backless strapless bra. “They go on discreetly and you still have support without the band or straps,” she says. For everyday wear, she suggests going with a convertible bra. “This type of bra is a great staple in your everyday wardrobe,” she tells Vogue. “They can be worn with the straps for when you’re wearing a t-shirt or blouse or go strapless with a casual, summer strapless dress.” It’s a two-for-one win that Zuccarini also stands behind, reminding us of its packing-friendly possibilities.

What design details should you look for?

Fabrication is as important as any other detail. “Bras stretch out as you wear them, so you want to start tighter than you think, especially with a strapless that needs to stay up. Stretch fabrics like microfibers tend to work better,” Zuccarini says. Next, look at the band and wings, which should be snug around the body.” Her tip, when testing strapless bras, is to “try a fitted top over, and check the profile of your bust, to ensure a seamless line,” she adds.

How do you keep a strapless bra up?

“I always suggest looking for a bra that has silicone and or rubber grips that will guarantee a snug fit,” says Afriyie. “Also sizing down a bit on your band size can help keep it up.” She stresses the importance of a snug band, as does Zuccarini, who suggests going tighter than your average bra. “You want to feel it on you, but not so tight that it’s uncomfortable,” she says. For even more extra support, Afriyie keeps boob tape on hand, just in case. “I personally love to use Hollywood Fashion Secret breast lift tape,” she says. “It’s pretty discreet and can go unnoticed in your strapless bra so the added lift literally is an extra bonus.” A little extra security is never a bad idea.
