Throughout Hollywood history, a number of legendary familial duos have starred together in movies, including Uma Thurman and Maya Hawke and Andie MacDowell and Margaret Qualley.

Laura Dern and Diane Ladd may hold the record, having appeared in nine films together until Ladd's death in 2025.

Though both actresses have had their share of experience in the industry, they acted together for the first time in the 2023 dark comedy The Kill Room.

Hawke told The Guardian in October 2021 that her parents — Thurman and actor Ethan Hawke — wanted her to pave her own way in Hollywood, and not just have "bit-parts in their movies."

The actress died before the release of two of the films — Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker — leading to alterations to the overall storyline.

Streep even changed her daughter's name in the credits to protect her identity.

The two also collaborated on 2007's Evening and 2015's Ricki and the Flash.

Like her sister, Meryl's younger daughter, Grace Gummer, also starred alongside her mom as a baby in the 1993 movie House of Spirits, and was also credited under a different name.

Dern shared the screen with her Oscar-nominated mom a whopping nine times, starting when she was 7 years old as an extra in 1974's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

The two went on to star together in 1990's Wild at Heart, 1991's Rambling Rose (for which they became the first mother and daughter to earn acting Oscar nominations in the same year), as well as a number of other notable projects.

Ladd also played Dern's mother in the HBO series Enlightened from 2011 to 2013, telling New Orleans Magazine in February 2014 that she was proud of her daughter's "incredible talent."

The actress told Entertainment Weekly at the time that she only used her daughter in the film because the other child actors were too afraid of her character.

Though they haven't shared the big screen yet, MacDowell and Qualley did play mother and daughter in the 2021 Netflix limited series Maid.

After the show premiered, MacDowell wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post that acting with her daughter was "an extraordinary honor, and an experience I will cherish forever."
