By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
I know you think they’re stupid for doing is this way but there was a rhyme and reason to it.
Interview Red Flags: Lots of Interviews and Waiting
It’s Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and the question is why do companies make you go through four interviews before making a decision? There’s a couple of reasons and I want to acknowledge a lot of you will just simply answer because they’re incompetent and stupid. Yes, some of them are but most of them aren’t. So, there’s a logic behind this.
First of all, let’s work with the phone interview. There’s a screener there who’s trying to superficially figure out whether or not you might be qualified based upon what you say and how you present yourself. They may not have the knowledge of what you do that you have but they’ll try and listen to how you present yourself to see if you mention the keywords the buzzwords that the hiring manager is looking for and from there feels comfortable in referring you.
They are a filter. They’re trying to screen someone out. They can’t hire.
The next interview may be with the hiring manager. It may be with the future colleagues. The future colleagues, they’re basically there to see whether or not you know what you claim to know.
That’s really that simple. The next one, the hiring manager, is there to confirm what he or she is being told and get a sense of your character and to figure out whether or not you might fit into the team. Now, I’m not a big fan of fit.
I’ve spoken about that with organizations for years. I don’t think managers know how to evaluate for fit especially since you’re on good behavior and so are they. So, understand that’s the logic of their interview.
They want to get a sense of what you know maybe at a deeper level and whether or not they trust you. So, ultimately, they’re looking for competence, self-confidence, character, chemistry, maybe some charisma depending upon the all of which translates into we trust you. And then the final interview might be with the manager’s boss in order to ensure that if you come on board, you reflect he or she and that no one’s misidentified.
How to Discuss Gaps in Your Resume During a Job Search
So, that’s fundamentally why. Could it be done better? Yeah, but people complain about panel interviews, too, where you and the team might sit down. That would knock off one of the levels.
They complain about you know, people are frightened of the entire process of interviewing and they create excuses slash impediments that interfere with their performance. Doing a panel interview would save a lot of time. Most people are scared of panels.
Doing it this way, people complain about multiple interviews. You can’t win if you’re an institution trying to evaluate someone. I’m Jeff Altman.
