5 Quick Brainteasers

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I’ve been hunting down leaders and staff for organizations for 40-plus years. I want to talk with you about the decision to change jobs and draw upon my own experience.

On two occasions in my career, I was working for organizations for 10 years or more. I was clearly entrenched in these organizations, very comfortable, despite some of the nonsense that existed there. We all know every organization has nonsense.

People have personalities. They have moods. You live with them for a long period of time.

They’re frustrating times. They’re great times. In the most recent instance, I was associated with a firm for more than a dozen years.

No matter what I did, no matter what I said, it was a lengthy period of time where I kept hitting my head against the wall in frustration and still, the idea of changing jobs didn’t come to mind. It took one more instance. I won’t . . . the details aren’t important.

For my wife to interrupt me one day and said, have you thought of changing jobs? Now, ultimately, I decided to start my own firm and sometimes, you just have to listen to what someone else tells you or what they ask you and pause and ask yourself the question, why not? What’s keeping you there? What’s so good about this situation that you’re willing to go through all the frustration that you go through? I’m in sales. Most of my income comes from commission. For those of you in salary positions, is it worth the salary that you get to experience the frustration that you’re going through? Why are you accepting this? Who are you trying to please in all of this? When all is said and done, ultimately, you have to make the right decision for you.

6 Ways to Know It’s Time to Go

But if you’re noticing that there are more days than not where you’re dealing with things that I refer to as nonsense, when no matter how hard an effort you’re making, success is not available to you. Sometimes that’s because of the market that you’re serving. Sometimes it’s because of the systems that you’re operating in.

By that, I mean, the company rules and regulations that are getting in the way of you getting the success that you want. Why are you putting up with it? My encouragement to you is to stop for a second and think or have an ally available, as in my case, my wife, who just simply, in a very simple way, asked, have you thought of changing jobs yet? And then think about it. Why not? Why not change jobs? Why tolerate the mediocrity of your current situation and perpetual unhappiness that comes with your role? So, this is Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter.
