When A Company Wants to Give You a Written Test

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the mistake many experienced job hunters make when interviewing with a company that gives a pre-employment test.

Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and today I’m going to talk with you about firms that do written testing. Often, with experienced candidates, you know, you’ve been out of school for five years or more, three years or more, and a firm wants you to take a written test as part of their search process, you’re willing to do it. But here’s the mistake that often is made.

You do it at about 70 or 75 percent of your capabilities. And on questions, you give good superficial answers, but you don’t get to the real texture, the meat of your knowledge, with the result being, if you give 70 or 75 percent of an answer, you’re a 70 or 75 percent of a candidate to the employer. And they see people who are a little hungrier, who put in more effort to answer questions and they go with them and not you.

So, my reminder to you is don’t sell yourself short. Don’t sell them short. Give them 100 percent effort on your tests and don’t give them these halfway answers.

Give them all the detail that you can within the time framework that you have to work with. So, this way, they can see how much you really know and they start to really embrace you as a candidate.
