If you don’t know something during an interview and the interviewer asks for your opinion, what is the best way to respond? Should you say “I’m not sure” or just give it a shot anyway?

Imagine you’re on an interview and you’re asked a question that you don’t know the answer to. How should you respond? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no-BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. Here’s how to go about doing it. Here’s how to go about answering a question like that.
Start off by acknowledging that you’re not sure. Don’t try and bluff your way through. You might just start by saying, “I haven’t dealt with something directly like this”. However, “if I were, I would consider these factors”. And thus, from there, you know, “if I face this kind of a role, I’d look at best practices,” blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You kind of sort through your thought process with an eye toward explaining how you’d address the situation. And then from there, I would conclude by saying, “How would you go about doing it if you were me? Teach me”. And just very simply, if you follow a simple model of acknowledging that you don’t know and then talk them through your process and explain, “I’d love to learn more. Teach me. How would you go about dealing with this?” You’ll go a lot further than trying to bluff your way through an answer.
