By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
This is a classic question that is asked job hunters, usually at a director level and above, particularly in the C suite that can be asked of staff at a lower level.
I Just Received an Offer for a Better Fitting Job
Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people. I try and help people be more effective with their job search, hiring, managing and leading, you know, workplace related stuff.
And this is a question that is geared toward people in a manager level and above. If you’re a staffer, you might get asked this, but the likelihood is really small. The question is, what is the one thing you would change about our firm if you could? Now, the reason for asking this question is, number one, to test to see whether you’ve done any homework about the firm, what their challenges are.
And number two, to see if you can think on your feet. So, the idea is not to be rude. You can’t simply say, you know, you guys are screwed up around whatever it is.
But instead, you have to preface it with a nice setup line. And the setup for this is to say, hey, look, everything I know about your firm comes from press. Not that press is wrong.
I don’t have the texture necessarily to go beyond that. I’ve done a little bit of sourcing. I’ve spoken to some friends of mine who have a perspective.
And at the same time, there’s nothing like being inside an organization, having the deep knowing that comes from that. Isn’t that a nice setup? It’s going to cushion the punch in the mouth that you’re going to give them. And the idea behind the answer is, remember, leaders have to make decisions.
You can’t necessarily be tender once you start going into the answers. But they’re going to want to get a sense of how you think, how you analyze, how you critique, how you come up with solutions. And in terms of the solutions, again, a setup is in order.
Because, hey, look, I don’t know the capabilities of the team I’m inheriting. So, again, execution and delivery can be a problem with this. But assuming I’ve got an excellent team of individuals, what I see us doing is . . . and then you start going into detail.
Again, you have to set up the introduction and you have to set up the transition to the proposed solutions and do it in a way that’s respectful, but at the same time, gives everyone the idea you’re a no BS kind of person.
