What do you do if the interviewer seems uninterested in your resume and experience during an interview?

Feeling Stuck in Your Job Search?

What do you do if an interviewer seems uninterested in your resume and experience? They look bored. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. It’s really very simple.

Now, I have to pause for a second and go, if this is in the first two minutes of the interview, you’re reading way past where you should. They may just be getting to know you a little bit. If this is 15 minutes in and they seem bored and disinterested, I would simply say, number one, I don’t really care if they care about my resume. I can, I’m concerned about whether or not they’re engaged in the interview. You may have already done enough that they would reject you.

However, what I would do in that circumstance, in any circumstance, 15 minutes in, is to pause for a second and go, “I could be reading this wrong, but I get the idea that you’re just not that interested in this interview. Am I getting you to bad time? Am I reading things wrong?” And what you’re doing is trying to find out whether or not they’re preoccupied because sometimes they’ve got something else on their mind. They’ve got a meeting coming up, they have some version of a work issue that’s pulling their attention away. You don’t know. All you’re doing is seeing that they’re not paying attention to you, your experience, your resume, anything.

So I would just very simply say, “Am I catching at a bad time because I have the idea that you’re not particularly interested in what I have to say?” And then be quiet. Let them say, “Yeah, you know, I haven’t heard anything about what I really need you to do.” Great, I don’t want to waste your time. I certainly don’t need to waste mine as well. Thank you for your honesty. I wish you good luck. If there’s anything I can do to help you in the future, please don’t hesitate to reach out and move on. Don’t say anything nasty. All that happens is they feel justified in having rejected you and they complain to other people about you. Doesn’t work.

Just very simply ask them, “I get the idea you’re preoccupied with something or maybe you’re just not into what I have to say. Am I reading this wrong?” And then be quiet.
