Ever heard an interviewer say, “You’ll get to wear many hats here!” and thought, ‘Great, variety!’? Think again! This #short exposes why being asked to “wear many hats” is often a major interview red flag, hinting at potential overwork, disorganization, and a lack of clear role definition. Learn to spot this and other subtle warnings, understand what they truly mean for your career, and ask the right questions to protect yourself.
Roadblocks. Perseverance. Adversity. Resilience. Determination.
If an interviewer, if a job, says you’re going to be wearing many hats, it should be a red flag for you that you’re being set up for failure. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.
You know, we’ve all heard the expression about a jack of all trades, and it’s often said in a disparaging way. The full quote, by the way, is “a jack of all trades, a master of none, is oft times better than a master of one”. But in modern times, that’s not the case. When you’re asked to wear many hats, if you’re asked to have multiple responsibilities that seem disparate to you, the problem is you’re being set up to fail. Why? Invariably, you’re going to disappoint someone. There’s going to be something you’re not quite as good at, and you’re going to be asked to do it, and you’re going to disappoint. And they’re going to hang that over your head as though, well, as though you’re incompetent. No one wants to ever be in that situation. And thus, I always discourage people from taking roles where you’re going to be asked to take on multiple responsibilities and be set up for failure.
