If you’re up for an executive role, let’s imagine for a second you’re staring at an opportunity you think is spectacular. The comp is going to be terrific, but you’re seeing vague or unmeasurable performance metrics in the deal. This isn’t some minor detail; it should be seen as a massive red flag in your compensation that can derail your career, can derail your earnings, and interfere with your ability to succeed.
Let me tell you what to do. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. Let me just tell you that you know you live and die with your results, but if they’re not clearly defining success metrics like your revenue targets, the growth KPIs, transformation milestones, you’re exposed. You’re going to be in a situation where you’re going to be dealing with subjective performance evaluations, and you’re never going to know whether or not you’re successful, and they have the ability to weaponize your deal and throw it back in your face and say you failed instead.
Before you agree to join, understand turnarounds. Early-stage companies may not have mature metrics yet, and thus it’s reasonable if the board, if the CEO, if other investors work with you that you all cooperate to come up with what success is going to look like in this role. The key is to get an agreement in writing that you’ll collaboratively define these benchmarks within your first 90 days. Otherwise, they have the ability to hang you out to dry. I have a lot of great content available at jobsearch.com community. Come over to the site, become an insider, download my free stuff, of course, but become an insider at any level so I can wind up coaching you and helping you avoid disasters like this.
