Using an Ally When the Job Offer is Made

Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and let’s talk today about a simple salary negotiation strategy. It should be obvious to you but for a lot of people it isn’t. So, let’s get to work.

Now, you’re in the middle of the negotiation. Maybe HR has extended the offer. Maybe the hiring manager has.

Let’s work with the assumption of HR here. So, HR often is fairly rigid and rules-oriented. For example, one client of mine says, we have the authority to increase salaries by a certain percentage as long as the person’s within that same job level.

Using that as an example, let’s say you’re an accountant. You’re going to remain an accountant. You’re not going to be a controller.

You’re going to do the same kind of accounting work for their organization as you did for yours. What they’ll do is they’ll increase your salary by a fixed percent. Now, let’s say that salary is too low for you.

Now, what do you do? HR doesn’t necessarily have the clout to instantly up the money. Your strategy is to get to an ally in this which is usually the hiring manager and saying to them, look, I’d really like to join. Great opportunity.

I’d love working with you but your HR organization extended an offer for me that’s a little too low. What would be more acceptable? He or she will respond. You’ll give them a number a little bit higher.

They’ll say, let me see what I can do. Often, it’s in the hiring manager’s interest to up the offer because being practical about it, if they have to go back to the well and interview from the beginning all over again to find another first choice, they’re wasting a lot of time, thus money, in order to get you to accept the offer or get someone to fill the job, I should say. So, here you’re looking for an ally from the hiring manager and they may say, look, my hands are tied.

I can’t do it at which point you have a choice but you’ve learned something about the amount of clout that this individual has within the firm that they don’t have the opportunity to increase an offer by a few thousand dollars. The HR is so controlling of the budget that they can’t get you on board. Again, I’m not going to tell you what to do here but you’ve learned something about their firm and you want to take that into account when you consider the offer.

Now, let’s do it the other way around. The hiring manager is lowballed. Let’s now look at HR as the ally and say that I really want to join.

He or she seems like such a great manager. The work would be terrific. The offer is just a touch low.

Could you increase the offer or have the offer increased to and you offer the alternative salary? They may say yes or no. They may talk about their benefits and how good they are. All in all, again, you’re learning something but the strategy here is go for the ally.

Go for the person who hasn’t extended the offer to be an advocate for you for increasing the money. This is Jeff Altman. Hope you found this video helpful.
