The POLIS concept reimagines urban traffic safety in robot powered cities by introducing a smart control system designed for environments where humans, delivery robots, drones, industrial machines, and animals share the streets. The system, imagined by designer Jimin Kim, blends advanced sensing and urban infrastructure to map movement patterns and anticipate collisions. Instead of traditional traffic lights, POLIS uses SLAM sensors for real-time spatial awareness and predictive monitoring. When an incident is detected, a robotic security barricade deploys to contain the hazard and prevent secondary accidents, constructing a protective buffer precisely where needed.
The design is intentionally subtle and futuristic, resembling a sleek lamppost that integrates seamlessly into cityscapes. Coverage extends in concentric ranges—near, mid, and far—with wireless networking enabling multiple POLIS units to coordinate across neighborhoods. This concept pushes the boundaries of urban safety by preparing cities for an era in which robots are just as common as pedestrians, and it rethinks how traffic infrastructure can respond intelligently and dynamically.
