In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the importance of updating your company’s career page with photos video and text and points you to a site to illustrate a great example.
The Stories We Tell Ourselves
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m back with more No BS Hiring Advice to help you bring on people more effectively and easily. Now, when I look at most corporate recruiting pages on a website, most of them are so ridiculously boring.
They’re very, very flat and they’re like developed by the Ministry of Propaganda for your organization. Let me give you an example. I’m going to change some of the language around rather than embarrass the firm.
But, you know, matter of fact, let me not even read it. I’ll just simply say, they all basically say, employees are so important to us. We need to hire great, dedicated, motivated people and we are going to treat you like gold.
Do we know how much they’re lying? Of course we do. But when all is said and done, writing stuff like this is nonsense. You start off your relationship with the employee or potential employee lying to them and, yes, employees are important but from their vantage point, you know, you treat them like commodities every step along the way even though you tell them they’re important.
They’re applying for jobs for the applicant tracking system. They have to fill out your boxes. When they interview, they have to conform to certain standards.
They know they’re not the most important thing because your behavior is telling them that. Instead, I want to encourage you to add a few things to your website that I think will actually show them that they matter. One thing . . . more pictures.
Show them the offices. Show them what the place looks like. Give them a flavor for the environment.
Secondly, video. Interview people who work for the organization. Talk about some of the ancillary things that go on there as well as the work.
Give them a flavor of the working environment and the personality of your firm. Video goes so, so well with organizations trying to hire. If you want to get an idea of how it can be done well, there’s a website that provides this service.
I want to be clear. I’m not being paid by them. I happened to listen to a podcast today where the founder was interviewed.
Took a look at the website. It’s a great model. If you choose to use the service, that’s your business.
If you incorporate the ideas that they do, again, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not being paid. So, if you go to TheMuse.com, that’s T-H-E-M-U-S-E.com and go exploring, you’ll see smaller firms tend to use photos and text.
Larger firms will use photo, text and video. They’ll interview a couple of employees and there’s a lot that a job hunter can tell by looking at the employee and listening to their voice. Incorporate that onto your website.
You’ll find that people become favorably predisposed, particularly younger workers. Younger workers have grown up in the video culture and it becomes a great way to connect with them. So, this is Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter.
I hope you found this video helpful. If you did, you’re watching on YouTube. Share it.
