There are a number of reasons I chose to buy my LG C5 TV, such as its OLED panel and 120Hz refresh rate, but one of the key factors that helped convince me was its abundance of HDMI 2.1 ports. This lets me connect all the devices I regularly use with it, like my Switch 2, PS5, PC, and Roku Ultra, without having to worry about using an HDMI switcher or constantly unplugging one device to connect another.
Needless to say, I regularly use all four HDMI ports on my TV, which means I’m often switching between inputs. However, one issue I ran into was the naming of these HDMI inputs. While LG tries to automatically label each HDMI input to match the connected device, it’s not always accurate, which can make it harder to switch inputs quickly without double-checking that I’ve actually picked the right one.
Fortunately, I found a solution to this, and if you have an LG TV, there’s actually a hidden way to rename all the HDMI inputs on your TV so you never have to second-guess whether you’re selecting the right one or not. And the best part? It’s quick and easy to do, and will save you lots of time in the long run.
How to rename the HDMI inputs on your LG TV
You can also change the icon for the input
To get started with renaming all the HDMI inputs on your LG TV, I recommend connecting any devices you use with your TV if they aren’t already connected, as it will make it easier to tell which HDMI port corresponds to which input, since LG does try to name them automatically.
Once you’ve done that, just follow this simple step-by-step guide:
1. Press the Input button on your remote.
2. The LG Home Hub will appear on your TV screen where you switch HDMI inputs. In the top-right corner of that screen, select the three-dots option.
3. Select Edit Inputs in the pop-up menu that appears.
4. You’ll then see a screen that lists all the HDMI inputs you currently have connected.
5. To rename an HDMI input, scroll down to it and select the name.
6. Type its name to match whatever it’s connected to (like PS5 or Switch 2). Press Enter when you’re finished.
7. Once you’ve renamed all your HDMI inputs, select Save.
It’s worth noting that in addition to renaming all the HDMI inputs on your TV, you can also change the icon for each input in that same Edit Inputs menu. So, for example, for my Switch 2, I changed the HDMI input to an icon with a controller, and for my Roku Ultra, the icon is a set-top box.
When it’s all said and done, when you switch your HDMI input, you’ll see them all labeled exactly as you named them (as you can see on my LG TV in the image above).
…while it’s a small change, it’s something I’ve really come to appreciate over time, especially since I’m constantly switching between inputs on my TV.
It’s a simple way to keep your TV’s HDMI inputs organized, and while it’s a small change, it’s something I’ve really come to appreciate over time, especially since I’m constantly switching between inputs on my TV.
