This popular Apple TV model is now officially considered ‘obsolete’

While we’re still waiting for Apple to release an updated Apple TV 4K, the tech giant has instead updated something else: its list of obsolete products, and it now includes a pretty odd addition: the 32GB Apple TV HD.

If you’re unfamiliar with Apple’s obsolete products list, it’s essentially where devices go once Apple has stopped selling them for more than seven years. At that point, the company no longer provides hardware service for them, meaning if you need parts for a repair, you’re out of luck.

What makes the 32GB Apple TV HD such a strange addition is that it still supports tvOS 26, so it’s technically up-to-date on the software side. Even more puzzling, the 64GB Apple TV HD hasn’t been added to the list. So while Apple will continue supporting that model, the 32GB version is being left behind.

Some users on Reddit expressed their bewilderment at this news, with one user commenting, “Still using the 32 gig Apple TV HD. Crazy to think an obsolete product is still fully up to date on the latest TVOS,” and another saying, “Crazy that the Apple TV HD is still receiving the latest tvOS 26 updates and is 1775075769 considered obsolete.”

In addition to adding the 32GB Apple TV HD to its list of obsolete products, Apple also added the iPad Mini 4, which also came out in 2015.

Is this a sign of things to come?

The Apple TV HD likely won’t get updated to tvOS 27

With the 32GB Apple TV HD now considered obsolete, it’s likely that it won’t receive the upcoming tvOS 27 update in the fall, and that tvOS 26 will be the last update it supports.

While that does suck, in all fairness, the 32GB Apple TV HD was released back in October 2015, so it’s had a pretty remarkable 11-year run, and it’s honestly kind of surprising that Apple even updated it to tvOS 26 in the first place. But this news also makes me wonder whether the 64GB Apple TV HD will soon become obsolete, on top of possibly not supporting tvOS 27.

If you have a 32GB Apple TV HD and have been hesitant to upgrade to an Apple TV 4K because you’re waiting for a new release, I don’t blame you. Rumors of a new model have been circulating for years, especially since the last Apple TV 4K came out in 2022.

According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple has had a new Apple TV 4K “ready since last year,” but it’s reportedly being held back from release because Apple is waiting to launch its new AI-powered Siri first, which has been delayed multiple times.

Hopefully, the new Apple TV 4K is able to launch sooner rather than later, because I think it’s safe to say a lot of people are eagerly awaiting it to upgrade their streaming setup, including me.
