Samsung has officially unveiled a next-generation Color E-Paper product, which it refers to as the EMDX series model EM32DX. The device ships with a large 32-inch display panel, and it leverages Samsung’s latest E-Paper display tech under the hood.

The EM32DX’s screen itself is 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, making it WQHD resolution. The E-Paper display is housed within a thin and light chassis with white borders, and it’s powered by a 4,700 mAH battery pack. The device is rechargeable via USB-C, and Samsung says it can last for up to 200 days on a single charge when displaying static color images.

“The EMDX series uses a color imaging algorithm that displays content with subtle contours, smooth gradations, and expressive colors in a paper-like appearance. The Color E-Paper not only has a lot to offer visually; the display’s energy efficiency is also impressive,” says Samsung in a newsroom post.

Energy efficiency is top of mind here, with Samsung boasting of an impressive 0.00W of energy consumption during device idle. As Good e-Reader points out, any device with a power draw of less than 0.005W can legally be rated at 0.00W.

Samsung is pitching its new Color E-Paper EM32DX as a progressive digital advertising solution. As an electronic signage replacement, the device offers an eco-friendly power draw — the company is quick to point out the corresponding sustainability and cost-efficiency benefits its panel is capable of providing.

With Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB-C-based charging and data transfer on deck, the EM32DX appears to be rather forward-thinking as far as E-Paper billboards are concerned. Samsung’s newsroom post includes a number of lifestyle images, showcasing the display in action across several environments: a coffee shop, a grocery store, and a clothing retailer.

Interestingly, the EM32DX is also capable of being controlled via a dedicated smartphone application. The Samsung E-Paper app is designed to make remote management of on-screen content an easy task, with options to create image playlists, designate power on and off times, and more. Samsung says the app requires Android 10 and later or iOS 15 or later, but there’s no word on when the software will actually launch on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

As with other E-Paper solutions, including those from rival brand E Ink, the EM32DX provides a paper-like display panel that can emulate the physical properties of paper. As a replacement for more traditional billboards and print-out signs, Samsung’s solution is compelling. Its 200 days of battery life and its negligible power draw are both great attributes, though we’ll have to see how the colored E-Paper tech itself stacks up to the competition.

We’ve seen color E-Paper and E Ink displays crop up on a number of consumer tech products in recent times. Amazon launched its first color Kindle, the Colorsoft, back in October of last year, and other tablet-style devices like the Boox Go Color 7 and the reMarkable Paper Pro have also hit the market. E-Paper technology has improved greatly, with faster refresh rates and response times, the addition of color, and other improvements now more commonplace than in years prior.

Personally, I’d love to see a scaled-down version of Samsung’s new Color E-Paper EM32DX hit the consumer market at some point. The current 32-inch model is ideal for business and retail environments, but I can imagine a smaller-screened variant proving popular as a bespoke at-home photo frame. I’d also like to see the EM32DX’s 8GB of internal storage be improved upon, or perhaps the addition of an SD or microSD card slot for easy storage expansion.

As E-Paper continues to mature, it’s possible that we’ll see the display tech manifest itself within new and novel contexts. Beyond e-readers, digital signs, and note-taking tablets, perhaps we’ll one day see a renaissance of E-Paper smartwatches. Now that Pebble is back from the grave, my hunch is that a new wave of low-power and stamina-rich watches will soon hit the market.
