So many people think they look desperate when they post they are #opentowork on #linkedin This is a way to tell people and use a marketing approach to it. I think it is fabulous.
When a Manager Doesn’t Intervene
I saw someone share a great way to post how you’re Open to Work on LinkedIn. Let me explain what they did. They started by bolding Open to Work and the functions they perform, in their case, Operations and Program Management, and using the location that LinkedIn suggests, Greater Seattle Area, Hybrid, and Remote. Now, each of these was separated by the pipe: Open to Work | Operations and Program Management | Greater Seattle Area | Hybrid and Remote.
From there, a description of what they did—I’m a fill-in-the-blank with how many
and some of the expertise that they have. From there, they went into a summary of their background, a summary of their impact, what they’re looking for in an organization, and what motivates them. They also included a link to their resume and something personal.
Why it works? Because it was a marketing document. The headline is a hook. The bold, all caps Open to Work, followed by targeted headlines and functions the person performs. It uses clear keywords. It was concise but had an impactful background. The impact statement talked in terms of numbers and the impact they’ve had on the firm. The human qualities, the section about, well, they had a service dog, and they brought a degree of humanity. They were clear about what they wanted and included a call to action, which included sharing the resume immediately without friction. Their tone was confident.
And here’s the big thing: so many Open to Work profiles, or I should say Open to Work posts, sound like people are desperate. The long and the short of it is, a post works because it hits a sweet spot of LinkedIn content: a clear headline, quantified achievements, a human touch, and a direct link. It was fabulous.
