Robbie Fowler came extremely close to winning the $10m Swing – the richest hole in golf.

Liverpool legend Fowler was taking part in the Reignwood Icons of Football Golf Tournament, a star-studded event in Bangkok which was attended by a host of other former footballers.

Team England was led by former golf star Lee Westwood and took on Team World, who were overseen by Sergio Garcia.

As well as Fowler, Team England was comprised of Jimmy Bullard, Joe Hart, Paul Ince, Phil Jagielka, Jermaine Jenas, Phil Jones, Paul Scholes, Lee Sharpe, Teddy Sheringham, John Terry and Theo Walcott. 

Meanwhile, Team World included stars such as Peter Schmeichel, Hamit Altintop, Gabriel Batistuta, Patrik Berger, Ronald de Boer, Nigel De Jong, Luís Figo, Diego Forlan, David Ginola, Ruud Gullit, Nemanja Vidic, Gianfranco Zola and Carlos Tevez.

Fowler came extremely close to securing the prize, a percentage of which would have been donated to charity.

As reported by LIV Golf Weekly, Fowler said: ‘Yeah, I’m not going to lie, I was bottling it when I hit that – I think Incy [Paul Ince] had already spent the money – he was more excited than me. I’m happy, I’m very happy.’

Fowler tried his luck from 170 yards out and came extremely close to securing success.

The likes of Tevez and Batistuta congratulated Fowler for his fine effort.

On Sunday the winner of the Icons Trophy will be determined.

Team England established early 17-3 lead in the morning session before Team World fought back to close the gap to 28-17 by day’s end.  

There is much more action to come on Sunday, with some of the most famous names in football swapping the pitch for the golf course. 

Fowler had two spells at Liverpool, for whom he scored 183 goals in total.

In addition, he had spells at Leeds United and Manchester City.

Fowler finished his playing career in Thailand with Muangthong United, who he later managed.

The former England international most recently managed Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah in 2023.
