This #short reminds you of an important strategy that makes you discoverable to recruiters and key contacts without you having to be an active content creator.

 

Who knows about you? How many people know about you? How do you get better known? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. And I have to say, although I’m focusing here on C-suite professionals, executives, it’s also true for staff-level professionals as well.

And the idea is again about reputational capital, but this is not about connecting; it’s about creating passive visibility on LinkedIn. Now, you don’t have to act like me and go full influencer mode, but LinkedIn is a platform where executive recruiters and decision makers quietly vet you. They observe you, they start to notice who’s engaging with you, what you’re sharing in the way of information.

And thus, posting or commenting once or twice a week, sharing a quick leadership insight, a link to a recent deal or article, or comment thoughtfully on an industry topic helps you stand out. So I’ll simply say, it shows that you’re current, it shows that you’re credible, it shows that you present as a thought leader and comfortable in the seat of being a leader. And that’s what you’re trying to do. You don’t have to write a book, although if you did, that’d be fabulous. But I’ll simply say, share your thinking about things, and it can come from comments. And if you’re commenting, at least 12 words is the requirement for it to have a beneficial impact on you and on the person whose message you’re posting to.

So again, create some visibility for yourself. Because again, the person who gets ahead isn’t always the smartest; they don’t always work the hardest, although those are great criteria to have. People get ahead by being alert to opportunity. Sometimes they’re internal to their organization, more often than not, they’re external. And for search firms and others, they want to feel like they found you. You don’t want to be applying; you want to be in a situation where they can find you and feel comfortable about referring you to their client. I have a lot more available at jobsearch.com/community.
