What’s the biggest mistake job hunters make in the course of a search? I’m Jeff Alman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for NOBS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. That was a question that someone asked me in response to a post I had on LinkedIn and I thought about it for a second and went back to my website. I’ve got 767 mistakes currently listed on my site, so not about my website, but about what job hunters do, and I thought about it and I realized, to me, the biggest mistake job hunters make is they go on an interview and they think that job description that they saw is accurate. Why do I say that? After all, it’s the job description you see. You have to understand how job descriptions are generated.
Friday afternoon someone gives notice. So what happens? Manager calls over to talent acquisition and goes, “You got that job description we used to hire Jeff?” “Yeah, he just quit. So maybe you could get it up on the website, maybe you can get it on LinkedIn, share it with their recruiting resources and see who you can get onto my calendar on Tuesday.” You notice what didn’t happen? She or he didn’t update it. They just activated something from the past and it may not reflect what the firm is currently looking for. It may not reflect what they’re looking for currently. All they know is this was previously approved to fill this job, that’s good enough, let’s get it out to all these people. So you go on an interview and you’ve practiced against that job description and it’s not right. You’re interviewing against a fiction, it’s not real.
You need to always ask at the beginning of the interview what their current thinking is about the role. You just simply say, “You know, I saw the job description, but I want to get your take on the role. Could you tell me about the job as you see it and what I can do to help?” And at worst, they’re going to say, “So what do you think the job is?” “Well, from what I read, you’re looking for someone with such and such and such and such to do such and such,” and that’s real straightforward and easy. But most of the time you’ll hear some texture, some things that are a little bit different, and thus you can adapt your entire approach to the interview based upon what they just told you. So the big mistake is thinking that job description is accurate because it isn’t. I’m Jeff Alman, hope you found this video helpful.
