T-Mobile wants you on a Go5G Plus plan, and you might have no choice in the matter

US cellular carrier T-Mobile has officially confirmed plans to transition users’ phone plans over to its Go5G Plus offering, with the switch over reportedly impacting primarily those with an existing Magenta Max plan (via Android Authority).

“Beginning with your next bill cycle after August 13, we’re upgrading your plan to Go5G Plus, which includes all the benefits you already have and more at no extra cost — like better deals on phone upgrades. You’ll also get more high-speed data, like 50GB of hotspot data and 15GB of high-speed data in Canada and Mexico,” reads a T-Mobile newsroom entry.

It appears there’s no way to opt out of this upcoming migration, though T-Mobile is offering the option to fast track the process by calling its 611 automated call system. The carrier pitches the move as a way to “help you find the best value,” describing the change as something that allows you to “simply enjoy the benefits and same great service in your new plan with no strings attached.”

T-Mobile’s website includes a dedicated Frequently Asked Questions section, which confirms that the upgrade to Go5G Plus won’t impact free lines, discounts, streaming perks, billing amounts, and billing process. The company pitches Go5G Plus as something that’ll give you better phone deals than your current plan, more mobile hotspot data, and more high-speed data in Canada and Mexico.

On the surface, T-Mobile’s move to migrate customers over to its Go5G Plus service sounds like an upgrade with no-strings attached. However, some are weary of the move, citing the carrier’s shaky track record when it comes to moving users over to new plans. The question arises whether this transition is entirely the result of goodwill, or whether there are financial incentives the public isn’t privy to.

Back in early April, T-Mobile hiked the price across the board on its legacy plans, leading to backlash and customer frustration. Of course, price hikes are nothing new in the carrier space, and rising energy costs, inflation, and other circumstances are largely out of any single company’s control. Nevertheless, if you’re an active T-Mobile customer, it’s worth keeping an eye out for that August 13 date, and watching your bill and plan parameters.

To T-Mobile’s credit, it has confirmed to Android Authority in a statement that customers on Price Lock plans (which ensures a fixed price over a specified period of time) are not being moved over at this time, and that Price Lock itself remains an option for eligible users.
