Breaking in shoes naturally over time works, but for those who want instant relief, massaging the leather is an effective alternative.

How to Soften the Heel Counter

To avoid blisters and make your shoes more comfortable, follow these steps:

  1. Identify the Stiff Areas – Feel inside the shoe and locate the rigid parts of the heel counter.
  2. Use Your Hands – Take both thumbs and firmly massage the leather in circular motions to soften it. You can also use your palm.
  3. Apply Heat (Optional) – A hairdryer on a low setting can help make the leather more pliable. Just be careful not to overheat, as this can damage the material. Heat will also come from your palms.
  4. Repeat as Needed – Some leathers require multiple sessions to achieve the desired softness.
