Smoke really turned up the heat in the show’s finale with onscreen deaths — and a surprising last-minute reveal — ahead of a possible season 2.
During the season 1 finale, which premiered on Friday, August 15, Michelle (Jurnee Smollett) accidentally killed her ex Steven (Rafe Spall), set fire to his house and framed her partner Dave (Taron Egerton) for the crimes while still trying to prove he was the arsonist they spent the whole season trying to unmask.
The investigation into Dave was getting to him, and he ultimately ended up driving Michelle into a forest fire to confront her. He attempted to kill her, but she gained the upper hand and was able to arrest him.
The final scene was an interrogation scene where Michelle tried to get Dave to confess to attempted murder, reckless endangerment and assault. In addition to finding Dave’s arsonist disguise in his car, the team also told him how his book included details from real crimes that only the person involved would know.

As Michelle pushed Dave to own up to his crimes, he came to a startling realization. Season 1 of Smoke showed Us a version of Dave played by Egerton, 35, which meant he was cool and appealing. The shocking twist was Dave seeing himself as quite older and heavier than he looked during the show’s entire run.
Costars John Leguizamo and Anna Chlumsky exclusively broke down the shocking twist for Us Weekly.
“I honestly think about this in my day-to-day life as I’m just walking about. I’m like, ‘Where are our characters going to go?’” Chlumsky, 44, who played Special Agent Dawn Hudson, shared. “I think that honestly, it’s all open for exploration. I really do.”
Chlumsky and Leguizamo, 65, both showed their support for the series to get more seasons.
“I think Dennis planned it for that,” Leguizamo teased. “It’s planned to go on [for more episodes]. So watch it. You can and see what happens.”

Inspired by the “Firebug” podcast, Smoke starred Egerton, Smollett, Spall and Greg Kinnear and told the story of notorious California arsonist John Leonard Orr, a fire captain and arson investigator who was convicted of serial arson and four counts of murder. He is believed to have set nearly 2,000 fires in a 30-year span, which makes him the most prolific serial arsonist in American history. He has maintained his innocence but reached a plea agreement that resulted in him being paroled in 2002.
Smoke ended open-ended enough for more episodes after Michelle’s brother deleted footage of her at Steve’s house but put it on a hard drive. Dave’s story was also not fully finished after the interrogation.
“I knew about John — or the original guy who set the fires in the ’90s. He was the preeminent arson investigator,” Leguizamo told Us about the show being inspired by real life events. “It ended up being that he was the expert only because he set the fires, killed dozens of people, burned millions of dollars worth of property and would never have stopped if he hadn’t been caught.”
Smoke is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
