Sarah Michelle Geller won’t tolerate this wooden stake through her character’s heart.
Shortly after the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor announced her and Chloé Zhao’s revival of the nostalgic drama was cancelled, she alleged the project didn’t always receive support from behind the scenes.
“We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him,” Sarah, 48, told People in an interview published March 16. “That’s very hard when you’re taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to me and Chloé.”
She continued of the Searchlight Pictures-produced sequel, “So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn’t watch it.”
Indeed, Sarah and the Hamnet filmmaker—who directed the first episode of Buffy: New Sunnydale—worked on the axed Hulu reboot for four years, but this process wasn’t always a smooth one. Beyond the executive’s alleged lack of interest, the Scream alum admitted she wasn’t interested in reviving her character at first.
