Salsa legend dies aged 75 as family share heartbreaking tributes


Legendary salsa musician Willie Colón has died at the age of 75, his family announced in a heartbreaking post. 

Colón ‘peacefully’ passed away on Saturday surrounded by family, relatives said. 

‘While we grieve his absence, we also rejoice in the timeless gift of his music and the cherished memories he created that will live on forever,’ they wrote. 

‘Our family is deeply grateful for your prayers and support during this time of mourning.’ 

Colón family asked for privacy while they grieve. 

The family did not reveal his cause of death.  

Colón was a pioneer in the salsa and the Nuyorican salsa movement. 

The Puerto Rican artistic community had asked for prayers for Colón as he was reportedly receiving medical treatment due to respiratory complications, NBC News reported.

Colón, who is of Puerto Rican descent, was born in South Bronx in New York City in April 1950. 

Throughout his life, he worked as a poet, composer, musical director, and most famously as a trombonist. 

He recorded his first album at the age of 16, called El Malo, in 1967. He worked with Héctor Lavoe on it before the two went on to become famous in the salsa world.

Colón was a talented musician who first started playing the flute in elementary school and eventually went on to play the bugle, trumpet, and trombone. 

Colón and Lavoe’s orchestra recorded many popular songs, such as Calle Luna, calle Sol; Abuelita, and El dia de mi suerte, among others, according to NBC News. 

He and Lavoe produced 16 albums together.  

In 1976, he launched a solo career with the release of The Good, Bad, and The Ugly, followed by Solo in 1988. 

He also started collaborating with Rubén Blades in 1977 after introducer Blades to the recording industry, NBC reported. They produced six albums together.

In 1995, he became the first person of color to serve on the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.  

Throughout his career, Colón released 40 albums. He was awarded nine Gold Records and five Platinum. 

He was nominated for Grammy Awards for tropical music eight times. He also won the Lifetime Achievement aware from the Latin Recording Academy in 2004. 

He also appeared in films and TV, including in Miami Vice and The Last Fight. 

The musician was also active in politics and endorsed many New York candidates. He recently criticized NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani on his Facebook page.

He also posted pro-Trump content to his page. 

Colón continued performing up to his death, with his last performance August 9 in Puerto Rico. 

He is survived by his wife, Julia Colón, and four children.
