Steve Carell is back on the small screen.
The Emmy-nominated actor is starring in the HBO comedy series, Rooster, which premieres on the streamer on Sunday, March 8. The 10-episode series features Carell as Greg Russo, a fiction author who turns his life around to become a writer-in-residence at the same New England college his daughter Katie (Charly Clive) works at as a professor.
Although Greg initially came with the intention to support his daughter, he starts to realize new things about himself while living out the college lifestyle. In addition to Carell and Clive playing a father-daughter duo, the show also stars Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley and Lauren Tsai, with appearances from Connie Britton and Robby Hoffman.
"The core relationship at the center is a father-daughter," co-showrunner and executive producer Bill Lawrence told PEOPLE in December 2025. "How do you navigate life when your kid doesn't have to listen to you anymore and they're dealing with adult problems. You might have experienced those problems before and you might've inflicted them on your kid by the example you gave them."

When does Rooster premiere?

Rooster premieres its first episode, called "Release the Brown Fat," on Sunday, March 8 at 10 p.m. ET.
The first episode introduces Greg and his daughter Katie. The trailer for Rooster showed how Greg runs to help Katie amid her marital troubles, but he soon finds out that her job is also at stake — after she "burned down a faculty house" and "assaulted a professor."
Before he knows it, Greg gets "sucked into the world" of higher education, as well as the fun extracurricular activities that come with being in a college setting. The series is named after the main character in Greg's book series.
Ahead of the series premiere, Carell teased to The Hollywood Reporter that the first episode was "one of the best comedy pilots I’ve read — period."
“Pilots are the hardest to write. You’re creating a world, you’re introducing it to an audience and you have to do it quickly, efficiently, without feeling like it’s all backstory — and be funny at the same time," he explained. Carell said he was "in" to play Greg right after finishing that first script.
