Restored Victorian Coastal Homes : house on a hill

London firm Hugh Strange Architects has just restored and added to the House on a Hill. It is a hillside Victorian residence in Hastings with a deep connection to the terraced concrete garden and a range of stepped metal and timber builds. The latest project continues to build on the extension from the 80s, as the garden had slowly fallen into despair. The team adds three glazed timber forms at the back of the home and fixes the concrete gardens with patches and metal anchors.

The founder of the studio explains the design, “The careful repair of the concrete terraces of the steeply sloping rear garden suggests a metaphor of darning: of precise interventions of anchoring and patching, in place of demolition and replacement, stitching the dilapidated site towards reuse. Onto this mended hillside, a series of lightweight timber structures allow the existing Victorian dwelling to reorientate towards the outside spaces, while also piecing together a new route up the rear garden through repaired and new elements.”
