AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, is spearheading DECONWASTE, a cutting-edge research initiative aimed at revolutionizing how plastic packaging waste is recycled specifically with the goal of making it safe for reuse in food contact applications.

The core of the project is a focus on polyolefins, one of the most common types of plastics used in packaging. While these materials are highly functional, their post-consumer recyclability for food-grade use remains a major challenge. DECONWASTE seeks to change that by developing innovative cleaning and decontamination processes that can safely remove contaminants from recycled polyolefins.

To meet the rigorous safety standards set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the project will investigate advanced decontamination technologies that go beyond current industry practices. The goal is to produce high-quality, food-safe recycled plastic from post-consumer waste.
