Did you know that the job titles listed on your resume and LinkedIn profile might be the very reason you’re being screened out for being “too experienced” (a common form of ageism)?
How Anne Got Noticed by Recruiters—and How You Can Too
Can you tell us my perspective on ageism and what we can do to help our cause if an employer might think we’re too old or seasoned experienced for the job we’re interviewing for? Now, I want to start off by saying many of you, many of you will be too experienced for the job that they’re interviewing for. It’s just the way it is. You’ll want too much money or they’ll think you’ll want too much money, which will make them hesitant to even want to talk with you.
After all, if they see the SVP in your resume and they’re looking for a director, they know you’re making significantly more than what they’d be willing to pay. So that’s not about ageism; that’s about being too experienced.
Now with ageism, delete some of the stuff on your LinkedIn profile from before the turn of the century. You can do that. If you open up that record under “Experience,” that company under “Experience,” and scroll down, you can delete that job. You can delete a lot of things, but focus in your resume on the last 10 years of your life and make sure your resume demonstrates how you fit the role that they’re looking for.
They don’t care what you did at, um, let’s say before 911. They don’t care about that, and the likelihood that is that that’s going to be relevant for what they’re looking for is really small. But the idea is always connect the dots between what you’ve done and what they’re looking for. Make it easy for them. Don’t make them have to think in order to figure out if you’re qualified because they won’t. That’s the reality to it. They won’t think. They’ll just say, “Doesn’t look like a particularly experienced guy, so I’ll take a pass.” I’m sorry, “This looks like a too experienced guy. We’ll take a pass because this job is probably $40,000 less than what she or he is looking for.” Make it easy.
