The BBC’s incoming director-general has promised to restore trust in the troubled broadcaster after a series of scandals.

Former Google executive Matt Brittin will replace Tim Davie at a turbulent time for the Corporation as it grapples with a $10billion lawsuit from Donald Trump and the fall-out over a racial slur being aired during the Baftas.

The 57-year-old, a non-executive director of Guardian Media Group and former Olympic rower, said: ‘This is a moment of real risk, yet also real opportunity.

‘The BBC needs the pace and energy to be both where stories are and where audiences are, to build on the reach, trust and creative strengths today, confront challenges with courage, and thrive as a public service fit for the future.’

Mr Davie resigned in November after it emerged the broadcaster edited footage to make it look like the US President had encouraged supporters to ‘fight’ during the Capitol riots in 2021, which led to Mr Trump bringing a $10 billion lawsuit.

His tenure was also marred by the resignation of Huw Edwards and his conviction for possessing indecent images of children, and the outcry after punk-rock duo Bob Vylan chanted ‘death to the IDF’ on air at Glastonbury last summer.
