Pictured: Man, 30, stabbed outside primary school in Alum Rock as suspect, 32, is quizzed over ‘murder’

A man who was stabbed to death in the street outside a primary school and nursery in Birmingham has been pictured.

Ali Alshmari, 30, died in the attack that unfolded in Alum Rock shortly before midday on Tuesday.

A woman in her 50s also suffered injuries to her hands but has since been discharged from hospital.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.

Armed police raced to Bridge Road at around 12.06pm to reports of a ‘multiple stabbing’.

The attack happened just yards away from The Rosary Catholic Primary School and Parkfield Community School, which were both placed into lockdown.

Police said they have recovered a knife they believe was used in the attack and that this is being ‘examined’.

Witnesses reported seeing a Good Samaritan drive his van at the knifeman in a desperate bid to stop the stabbing.

The suspect then ran into a block of flats and barricaded himself inside.

Children from Rosary Catholic Primary School were not believed to have been in the playground at the time of the attack.

Parents gathered at a cordon yesterday afternoon after the school and an adjoining nursery were put into lockdown.

Others could be seen performing CPR on the victim, who appeared to be barefoot and covered in blood.

A witness said: ‘I was driving down the road in my van. I saw a guy on the floor covered in blood.

‘I parked my van and jumped out to help him. I don’t care what colour or religion you are, you help people.

‘There was a woman screaming from one of the flats, so the attack must have started there.’

Detective Superintendent James Munro said: ‘This is a tragic and violent attack which has cost the life of Mr Alshmari, and left a woman injured.

‘We are doing everything we can to establish exactly what happened and why, and the public’s response has been fantastic.

‘We’ve had CCTV, dashcam and mobile footage shared with us, which has been very helpful for the investigation, and I’d urge anyone who’s not yet been in touch with us to do so as soon as possible.

‘We understand how deeply distressing and concerning this incident is and we will have extra officers in the area to offer reassurance to the community.’

Officers said the incident is not being treated as terror-related.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman previously said: ‘Crews arrived to find a man with serious injuries and administered advanced life support on scene.

‘A second patient, a woman, was treated for less serious injuries.’
