Nvidia Shield TV gets promising new update

The Nvidia Shield is still one of the most popular Android TV boxes around, and even though Nvidia hasn’t released a new model since 2019, the company recently reaffirmed its commitment to keeping existing Shield TVs up to date. Now, just a few weeks later, it’s already backing that up.

Nvidia has rolled out “Shield Experience Upgrade 9.2.4” for all Shield TV and Shield TV Pro devices. The update addresses several quality-of-life issues users have run into, including Disney+ playback problems and third-party Bluetooth remotes randomly disconnecting. Nvidia also says the update improves overall system stability and enhances compatibility with other devices in your entertainment setup. Additionally, the release updates Shield TV’s security patches to January 2026.

Nvidia’s support for Shield TV isn’t going anywhere

A new Shield TV may come one day

Nvidia launched its first Shield TV back in 2015, followed by a refresh in 2017. In 2019, it introduced two more models, the Shield TV and Shield TV Pro, which are still the latest versions available today.

So while the original Shield TV is now more than a decade old, Nvidia is still pushing updates to the platform. That’s quite impressive, especially since most streaming devices and smart TVs don’t come close to that level of long-term support.

The response to this latest release has been largely positive as well. On Nvidia’s forums, one user noted that the stuttering issue with Disney+ appears to be resolved, and on Reddit, another user wrote, “Installed in just a couple minutes, no issues observed. Really nice to see the latest security patch included. Nvidia rocks.”

If you have a Shield TV and want to grab the latest update, all you have to do is go to Settings > Devices Preferences > About > System Upgrade.

Plenty of users also took the opportunity to praise Nvidia for continuing to support the Shield lineup. One Redditor called it “unbelievable that we’re still getting updates on this dream machine, at least for me,” while another said their Shield TV has been their “greatest tech purchase of all time.”

If you have a Shield TV and want to grab the latest update, all you have to do is go to Settings > Devices Preferences > About > System Upgrade.

As for when — or if — Nvidia will release a new Shield TV, the company hasn’t confirmed anything. That said, Nvidia’s senior VP of hardware engineering, Andrew Bell, hasn’t completely ruled it out. During a recent interview with Ars Technica, he was asked whether a new Shield TV is on the way and said, “We talk about it all the time — I’d love to,” adding that if Nvidia lands on a new Shield concept it’s excited about, it would likely move forward with it.

So while a new Shield TV hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s not entirely off the table, and may come one day. As for update support, Bell said that Nvidia has no plans to stop updating its Shield TV devices “any time soon.” So this new Shield TV update, 9.2.4, certainly isn’t the last, and there’s more to come.
